Tyler's Birth Story!

Monday June 27th, 2011.
I arrived at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital at 12:55PM for my routine ultrasound to check on my baby boy!  As of June 27th I was officially five days overdue.  My ultrasound was done fairly quick, and the sonographer said that he looked healthy and all of his body parts were working correctly. She told me she needed to show the pictures to her “doctor” which is basically like her teacher I believe.  She sent me back into the waiting room. About 20 minutes later, she came to me with the clipboard ofall my info and sent me back upstairs to the Obstetrical Assessment Unit for my routine NST (non-stress test). I had just been settling onto the bed for a nurse to test my blood pressure, and to hook me up to the machine when another nurse opened the curtain and asked my name. I gave it to her, and she said “You’re going to be induced today. Your baby’s fluid is getting to low, and you’re already overdue so there is no point in waiting.” I was in utter shock! I called Ryan to let him know, and then my mom but she didn’t answer. I then called Ryan’s mom, and within 15 minutes they were both here. I tried calling my mom but she just wouldn’t answer the phone. I had called her 72 times before the phone got answered. The nurse made me an inpatient and gave me a hospital band then sent me into a room. I waited for my doctor, and had some blood work done. At 3:25PM my doctor induced me with Cervidel.  I had to wait two hours, and then I was moved to the “Ante-Partum” Unit. I basically just laid in the bed, did some walking all to help my cervix dilate. I started getting minor contractions around 11PM but the nurse just thought it was the cramping from the Cervidel since it is known to cause mild cramping.I informed the nurse that my underwear was very wet, and she swabbed it and let me know that my water had broken! I had my cervix checked again and I was already 3CM dilated! Because of being 3CM I got moved to labor/delivery unit, where I was hooked up to an IV receiving sugar water in one, and a Penicillin one due to being GBS positive. (GBS is a bacteria known as Group B Streptococcus). At this time, the contractions were getting more and more painful. I had a lot of support from my mom, Ryan, and his mom through my contractions which was very very helpful, but it didn’t help take away the pain. I finally caved, and asked for an epidural. I received the epidural around 3:30AM. After that, I couldn’t really feel anything and was very happy! The anaesthesiologist (The doctor who gave me my epidural) became my best friend. I tried to sleep, so I listened to some music on my iPod. Around 6:30 am, I was beginning to feel a lot of pressure, and feeling the need to push. I informed the doc tor, and they checked my cervix and I was 6CM dilated so I definitely had to resist the feeling to push otherwise my cervix would swell and I wouldn’t be able to deliver him naturally. At about 8AM, the doctors noticed that my baby’s heart rate kept dropping whenever I was having contractions. I let them know I felt like I constantly needed to make a bowel movement and when they checked my cervix I was almost 9CM dilated. Unfortunately, baby was not receiving enough oxygen and his heart rate kept dropping and my blood pressure was very low. A dangerous situation for both of us, they gave me an emergency c-section. I had woken Ryan up earlier because his boss was calling the cellphone. He gave him the OK to miss work, and told him that his schedule for the week had been cleared. About 5 minutes later, Ryan used the washroom and came out to see a bunch of doctors huddled over me, and me wearing an oxygen mask to get oxygen to the baby. He was tossed some scrubs and got told to change so he could come into the operating room with me. I was then wheeled out, and in the hallway I met my OB/GYN who was very reassuring that everything would be okay. I was given loads of medication to numb me from the stomach down and at 8:51AM our beautiful boy was born. Tyler Ryan James weighed 8lbs 5oz and was 20.5 inches. :)
